Since i've move to Russia, of course i need a car, especially soon winter will come. So i'm thinking of having another car for winter. And what's on my list is... a Second-gen Audi A8L.

Why? Simple. It's Pretty cheap to buy (5-6k USD can you get an A8 3.0 Quattro), It looks quite nice, it's pretty comfortable, and since everybody has a black saloon, it's blend in. The only drawbacks is, i'm afraid this will happens:

So, is there any other serious issues about these A8? What engine should i get?

I'd buy a grey one with a little cosmetic damage for cheap, dings on each panel=useless to strip and sell. I wont talk you out of it though, those are great looking cars.

They look great in black too, any dark colour and they look pretty menacing. I bought my car with a few little dents and scratches since it saved me some cash and also I don't get upset when someone inevitably slams their door into it in a car park...

The 4.2l is fairly reliable, unless the timing chain tensioner goes. I'm not sure about the 3.0 engine. The W12 would be great, but I'm not sure about reliability on it either

Nope. I've driven their Italian cousin in Indonesia, and it's not very good even for my slow standards.

Just remember they're that cheap for a reason. Parts for this (type of) car are very expensive. Friend of mine needed to replace the A/C-unit which cost him around 2500 euro. Parts alone. No VAT. Otherwise great car, get that 4.0 V8 diesel!

I would love a W12, but only if it's cheap. If it's not the 4.2 is the way to go.

Yeah. In my experience i think V12 is much more reliable if you want 12 cylinder..

My dad was in the market for a used luxury car and I can happily report I got him to test drive one and he loved it, then bought it. That had to of been at least 3 years ago now and nothing major has gone wrong on the car.

But make sure the suspension works properly before you buy it, iirc its like $5k to fix.

Honestly I haven't the slightest clue. My dad wanted me to find out major faults with the car, I told him about the air suspension being costly to replace. He then got it inspected and it was all good, looked no further into it.

But Mercedes! That Audi seems cheap now, just wait until it starts giving you issues, which it will. I have a friend who has that engine. It has spent more time in the shop over the last year than on the road, no exaggeration necessary. I suspect it's got a cracked block this time.

Ive heard that they make cheap kits that use springs to change it to a conventional suspension because a lot of secondhand or long-term owners dont actually need air suspension so when it eventually fails they just switch over

In a perfect world, you should get a W12 or an S8 V10, which are monsters. In your case, I would go for the 4.2 V8 and LWB if you can.

I think theyre way cheaper than 20k. I know someone on here (he has duesenberg in his name) bought one as his first car a little while ago

Yea, SM70, he actually just liked my first comment in here, lol. He has the first gen though (not that thats a bad thing).

But after a quick Autotrader search they're $10-24k. My dad's still has well under a 100k miles so should be somewhere in the high teens. Thats not too bad, IIRC he spent $24k.

Id go for the W12 if it was in budget.

If not, then the 4.2 would do nicely, I love those wheels as well, makes it look like a bank vault.
